Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has vetoed a bill that would have removed tax-exempt status from several Confederate heritage organizations, including the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The bill, introduced by Delegate Alex Askew, passed both chambers before Youngkin blocked it for the second straight year. He said the measure unfairly targeted specific groups and called for broader tax reform instead. Middlesex County once had an active UDC chapter that helped erect a 1910 monument in Saluda, which voters chose to keep in a 2022 referendum.
