Virginia Tech has announced James Franklin as its new head football coach, with a contract averaging over $8 million per year through 2030. The five-year deal guarantees at least $41.75 million, climbing to more than $13 million in 2030, not including performance bonuses for national titles or TV ratings. Franklin, recently dismissed by Penn State after three straight losses, replaces Brent Pry, who was fired after an 0-3 start this season — the program’s worst opening in nearly 40 years. Franklin now ranks among the highest-paid coaches in college football, well above UVA’s Tony Elliott at $4.4 million this year.
