Virginia Sheep And Goat Flocks Growing

Virginia’s sheep and goat flocks continue to grow, according to the latest USDA survey. The state’s sheep inventory rose by 1 percent, from 79,000 in 2024 to 80,000 in 2025. Experts attribute the increase to strong market prices and proximity to ethnic markets, which drive demand. While wool prices have dropped, hair sheep are seeing significant growth due to their lower maintenance and suitability for small-acreage farms. Additionally, Virginia’s goat inventory increased to 35,000, highlighting the rising popularity of small ruminants in the state.
