Virginia Among Few States to Pass License Plate Reader Laws

Virginia is one of just three states this year to enact laws regulating automated license plate readers, joining Arkansas and Idaho. The legislation sets rules for how law enforcement can use the high-speed cameras and store collected data. Lawmakers in at least 16 states introduced similar bills, but only a handful passed. Privacy groups have raised concerns about potential misuse and data breaches, while supporters say the readers help with traffic and crime investigations.
