Temporary repairs are underway on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge to end manually operated openings that have slowed traffic since November. The Virginia Department of Transportation says crews are installing new hydraulic equipment to replace damaged lift system components, cutting opening times back to about 20 to 25 minutes. The short-term project carries an estimated $1 million price tag and should wrap up within the next few weeks, weather permitting. VDOT says planning continues on a permanent fix while the temporary system is put in place.
