Taxpayers Question County Subsidizing Water Authority

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors approved zoning changes for new developments to connect to the Middlesex Water Authority. That in turn, sparked some concerns from residents that taxpayers are subsidizing the system. The county invested $700,000 in fire hydrants and upgraded water lines to provide adequate pressure and volume for fire protection, including a major house fire at Stingray Point last year. Middlesex County pays $254,000 annually as part of a USDA loan to cover the enhanced infrastructure, while new construction must meet MWA standards before connecting to the system.
