The Mathews County Planning Commission, at their recent meeting, voted to advise the Board of Supervisors not to establish a public park on two acres of county-owned land on Gwynn’s Island. Residents of South Bay Haven Drive expressed strong opposition, favoring the land remain vacant or sold to a private organization. Proposed park amenities had included a kayak launch, pavilion, and picnic areas. The commission noted the land’s FEMA restrictions and the neighborhood’s density as key concerns. The Board of Supervisors will consider the recommendation while exploring other options for the property.
