A wildlife researcher says the commercial harvesting of menhaden in Virginia waters is wiping out a key food source for ospreys. Dr. Brian Watts from William & Mary told a crowd in Urbanna that the loss of menhaden has caused a sharp drop in osprey nest success. Virginia is the only Chesapeake Bay state that still allows large-scale menhaden fishing. Watts says the state’s failure to fund a population study is delaying any solution to the ongoing bird decline.
