Northumberland County planners are evaluating potential sites for a new animal shelter after supervisors approved the project. The planning commission is reviewing county-owned properties, including the current shelter location, the old school board site in Lottsburg, and the former poorhouse tract. Commission members will meet February 19 with shelter staff to discuss specific needs and space requirements. Friends of the Northumberland County Animal Shelter plan to fund and build the facility before donating it to the county. Soil and wetlands assessments are underway to determine suitable locations and budget considerations.
