Northumberland Board Rejects $22.6 Million School Budget

Northumberland supervisors have rejected a proposed $22.6 million school budget, citing unsustainable costs and calling for up to $1.9 million in cuts. The county’s draft budget holds school funding flat at $14.8 million, but the school board requested $16.2 million—a 9% increase. The plan includes pay raises, rising health costs, and a payout to the former superintendent. Supervisors warned the added expenses could push a tax hike as high as 16 cents. A public hearing on both budgets is set for June 5 at 6 p.m.
