The Mathews Volunteer Fire Department recently celebrated its annual awards banquet at the Piankatank Ruritan Club in Hudgins. President Donnie Lewis thanked attendees and recognized outstanding service. Awards went to firefighters for milestone years of service, with Station 2 named “Station of the Year.” Troy Garrett was honored as “Firefighter of the Year.” The evening also featured a keynote address by Larry Logan, a veteran firefighter, and a tribute to fallen members Billy Godsey, James Stewart Jr., and James Hudgins.
