Lead Poisoning Blamed In Middlesex County Eagle’s Collision With Vehicle

Wildlife officials say lead poisoning likely contributed to a bald eagle being hit by a vehicle in Middlesex County. The bird was treated at the Wildlife Center of Virginia for a fractured shoulder and high lead levels after the May 26 accident. Staff believe the poisoning caused coordination issues, making the eagle vulnerable to traffic. After two months of rehab, it was released at Belle Isle State Park in Lancaster County. Experts say hunters switching to nonlead ammunition could reduce such cases.
