Invasive Blue Catfish Continue to Overpopulate Virginia Waters

More than 60 years after their introduction, invasive blue catfish are thriving in Virginia rivers, particularly the James and York. Researchers say the hardy species eats native wildlife, including blue crabs, and reproduces for decades, making population control difficult. They say efforts to remove large numbers face challenges, and a commercial fishery has limited profitability. State and federal agencies are now collaborating with scientists to manage the overpopulation and protect native species.
