Large sheets of ice have surrounded Tangier and Smith islands, cutting off boat travel and stopping deliveries of food, medicine and mail since last Friday. Residents say frozen waterways have also kept watermen from reaching their boats and crab shanties, leaving many unable to work. An icebreaker is scheduled to reach Smith Island today and Tangier Island on Thursday, offering hope that supply routes could reopen if conditions improve.
