General Assembly back in Richmond talking Congressional redistricting

Virginia lawmakers returned to Richmond on Monday to begin debating a proposed constitutional amendment that could reopen congressional redistricting. Democrats say the effort would allow new maps that reflect population changes and public input, while Republicans argue it’s a partisan power grab aimed at flipping GOP-held seats. The proposal comes as several other states pursue or have approved, such as North Carolina, mid-decade redistricting ahead of the 2026 elections at the behest of President Trump. Virginia’s plan would still keep its bipartisan redistricting commission but allow changes under “extraordinary circumstances.” The Senate meets again today, while the House will reconvene tomorrow.
