The advertising visionary behind Virginia’s iconic “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan has died. George Woltz, co-founder of the Martin & Woltz agency, passed away July 16 in Naples, Florida, at age 92. Woltz helped launch the daring campaign in 1969, which became the longest-running state tourism slogan in the U.S. Known for his humility and perfectionism, Woltz shaped Virginia’s image and mentored generations of creatives. He began his career after serving in the Army and co-founded the Richmond-based agency that later became The Martin Agency. Woltz retired early and spent his later years with his wife in Florida.
