The Chesapeake Bay Program says it’s on track to exceed its goal of restoring oyster habitats in 10 tributaries by the end of this year. In the Commonwealth, restoration has taken place in the Piankatank, Great Wicomico, Lower York, Lynnhaven, Lafayette and Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth rivers. Crews are preparing to plant the final reefs in Maryland’s Manokin River, bringing the total to 11 restored rivers across Maryland and Virginia. Over 2,200 acres of reef have been rebuilt, making this the largest oyster restoration project in the world.
