Bill Would Create Voluntary Fund To Cut Wildlife Crashes In Virginia

Virginia, which ranks among the nation’s top states for wildlife-vehicle collisions, could soon launch a voluntary grant fund to build wildlife corridors and crossings. A proposed bill would create a nonreverting fund supported by optional donations, not new taxes. If approved, projects would be overseen by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources in coordination with transportation and conservation agencies, with contributions offered through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and income tax checkoffs. Supporters say the plan could reduce crashes, protect wildlife, and help Virginia leverage federal matching dollars while keeping participation strictly voluntary.
