Virginia Senate Budget Drops Data Center Tax Break

The Virginia Senate has approved a proposed state budget that removes the long-standing sales tax exemption for data centers, a move expected to generate more than one billion dollars in new revenue. Senate leaders say the added money could support tax relief and other priorities, but the change opens a sharp divide with the House of Delegates, which favors keeping the incentive with added conditions. Budget negotiators now face a tight window to reach a compromise before the Virginia General Assembly is scheduled to adjourn in less than three weeks. Data center growth, especially in Northern Virginia and expanding into other regions, remains one of the most contentious issues in the talks.
