Mathews Board Approves 1 Point 34 Million Budget Increase

Mathews County supervisors approved a $1.34 million increase to the current fiscal year budget, raising total spending to $37.49 million, a 3 percent boost. The 3-2 vote followed a public hearing where residents expressed concern over tax impacts, while others supported funding for schools. The budget includes $211,628 for school resource officers, $117,668 for a new vehicle, and $315,000 for capital improvements. Officials said state and local revenue shifts, plus SNAP funds and transfers from the fund balance, will cover the increases. Outgoing supervisors Walls and Jones opposed the measure.
