Court documents show the medical center hired Dr. Javaid Perwaiz and allegedly allowed him to practice medicine from 1984 until he was arrested in 2019. Prosecutors say hospital officials knew he had been fired from another hospital for performing unnecessary surgeries, and in 1996, he was convicted of two federal felonies. The hospital received about $18.5 million dollars in reimbursements for procedures performed by Dr. Javaid Perwaiz from 2010 to 2019. The indictment claims that the hospital was complicit in a scheme to prioritize profits over patient care. Perwaiz was convicted of health care fraud and false statements in 2020 and sentenced to 59 years in prison.
