Chesapeake Bay Colder and Saltier

Water in the Chesapeake Bay was colder and saltier than average this winter, according to NOAA buoy data. Lower rainfall meant less freshwater flow, which pushed salinity higher—up to 5 PSU above normal near Annapolis. Cold temperatures may help striped bass spawning but could also raise mortality for blue crabs and intertidal oysters. Oxygen levels stayed healthy at monitored sites.
