Severe Drought Continues in Northumberland County

Northumberland County remains under severe drought conditions despite recent rainfall. Emergency Services Chief Chris Bailey says the county may need about 10 inches of rain within 30 days to end the drought. State agencies are monitoring conditions daily but are not recommending restrictions yet.

Northumberland School Board Chairman Resigns

Northumberland School Board Chairman Dave Curran has submitted his resignation, effective July 31. Curran, who represents District 5, cited personal reasons requiring his full attention and called his service an honor and privilege. Virginia’s three-day sales tax holiday will run from Aug. 7 through Aug. 9. Shoppers can buy qualifying school supplies costing $20 or less per item and clothing or footwear priced at $100 or less without paying sales tax. Certain emergency supplies, generators, chainsaws and Energy Star or WaterSense products also qualify under separate price limits.
